As part of Dolly Parton’s massively successful Smoky Mountains Rise telethon, Chris Stapleton premiered a new track, “Broken Halos.” Alongside his wife, Morgane, Stapleton debuted the song in what wound up becoming one of the highlights of the telethon.

Dolly’s Smoky Mountains Rise telethon raised a whopping $2.1 million for victims of the East Tennessee fires. Stapleton’s involvement no doubt made a large impact on the night, and excited everyone with his new song.

While singing live, Chris and Morgane brought chills to the telethon, singing about seeing their share of broken halos. The song was powerful, considering the devastating reason for the telethon, as they sang about the “the by and by.” Skip to the 17:00 mark in the video below to hear “Broken Halos.”

The song echoes the confusion that victims of the East Tennessee fires are no doubt feeling. The two sang of angels coming to help in times of need, but disappearing before we can ever fully understand. It was a beautiful moment for an important cause, the new song from Chris Stapleton making it all the more sweet.

The telethon version of “Broken Halos” certainly felt a little more scaled back in Stapleton terms, but it still moved. Hopefully, the debut of the song means that Chris has new tunes to share in the near future. If not the near future, at least we’ll have this version of “Broken Halos” in the mean time.
