See Alan Jackson’s Moving Final Tribute to George Jones

Today, Sept. 12, would have been George Jones' 85th birthday. We lost the "The Possum" in April of 2013. He left behind an indelible mark on country music as one of the finest male singers the genre has ever known. His music inspired countless singers, both in country music and other genres.

At his memorial service, held in May of 2013 at the Grand Ole Opry, musicians, friends and family gathered to mourn his passing and celebrate his legacy. Throughout the service, Jones' closest musician friends paid tribute to the legendary singer.

It was an emotional service, to say the least. Vince Gill broke down while singing "Go Rest High on That Mountain", and when Alan Jackson closed the funeral with "He Stopped Loving Her Today," there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

In the video below, you can watch Jackson's stirring performance. It's hard not to get teary-eyed; even Jackson gets choked up singing the last refrain.

Jones may have passed, but his music continues to influence today's younger country artists. Check out these two George Jones covers by Robert Ellis and Mo Pitney.
