Singer-songwriters John Doe and Hayes Carll recently gave an incredible impromptu live performance of "I Always Get Lucky With You" at the SiriusXM studios. The song was a George Jones hit in 1983 and was written by four country greats -- Merle Haggard, Freddy Powers, Gary Church and Tex Whitson.
Sadly, we've lost both Haggard and Powers, each country music icons in their own rights, in 2016. When he wasn't penning hit songs for country artists, Powers also played guitar in Haggard's band, The Strangers.
Doe is an actor, singer and songwriter and also a founding (and active) member of the punk band, X. Hayes Carll is a singer-songwriter and Texas native who was nominated this year for Best Country Song at the Grammys.
The duo's cover of "I Always Get Lucky With You" is simple, beautiful and a wonderful tribute to Haggard and Powers.
The song was originally written and recorded by Haggard in 1981, but he never released it as a single. George Jones then took it on and put it on his studio album, Shine On. The track was Jones' final No. 1 hit on the country charts and it spent about 13 weeks in the top spot.
