In what was meant to be a day of celebration, Aaron White and his wife, Kaylaigh, invited friends and family to their wedding ceremony in July 2024.
Mere hours after tying the knot, all hell broke loose.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined that Kaylaigh's stepfather, Jason Maughon, and another relative of the bride were involved in a fight before arriving at the wedding venue in separate vehicles, per the Rockdale Citizen.
Apparently, their feud spilled over to the wedding ceremony. Authorities said the bride's other relative later began firing a gun at the event. Investigators said Maughon then ran toward White, who retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and shot him. White told investigators that he acted in self-defense.
White told WSB-TV that he shot at Maughon because he "feared for my life."
"The last time I seen him, he was threatening to cut me. So it's a fear for my life," White said. "[It] really makes you, as much as you don't want to have to second-guess, having to defend yourself."
White was arrested in January and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Maughon.
Jurors Determined That Aaron White Acted in Self-Defense
The GBI presented the case to a Butts County grand jury on April 14, 2025. Jurors determined there was insufficient evidence to indict, according to prosecutors.
The case was later transferred to the Henry County District Attorney's Office after a judge disqualified the Towaliga Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office.
The Henry County District Attorney's Office then took over the case. Flint Judicial Circuit District Attorney Darius Pattillo said the charges against White have now been dropped, per the Rockdale Citizen and WSB-TV.
Maughon's family said justice was not served and will continue pursuing accountability for the 44-year-old's death.
