I think it's fair to say we're all a little worried about AI. While it's a really cool technology, it can also cause some problems. Especially when it's overused.
And that's something we're seeing now. As reported by Suggest, a Tennessee grandmother has allegedly been jailed for 5 months. And AI face recognition software is apparently behind it. North Dakota authorities apparently identified her as a suspect using it.
50-year-old Angela Lipps said that US Marshals arrested her at her home in July last year. This was after they apparently linked her to a bank fraud investigation in North Dakota. But, she claims she's never visited the mountainous state, and AI got it wrong.
Surveillance footage of the bank fraud showed a woman using a fake US Army ID card to withdraw money from bank accounts. Lipps was then identified when authorities ran the images through AI facial recognition software.
Following this, she was charged with four counts of unauthorized use of personal identifying information, and four counts of theft. She was then booked into a Tennessee county jail.

She Was Forced to Wait Four Months To Face Trial Because of the AI Mistake
Because of the AI facial recognition software flagging her from across the country, the process of expediting her took a while. Four months to be exact - where she spent the whole time incarcerated without bail.
Only then was she granted an interview with the police. Her lawyer managed to get bank records that showed Lipps was in Tennessee at the time of the crimes.
Five days after this catastrophic interview, they let her go. But they didn't bring her home - she had to arrange her own travel. In the end, local attorneys and a nonprofit group scrounged up the money to help her get back to her Tennessee home.
This story really does raise some concerns about the bad uses of AI. While it can be used for some pretty cool things, it's also got its bad sides. In one case, a singer had his concert cancelled after AI accused him of being a sex offender.
I think people just really need to be a little more careful with these things.
