The shooter, 45-year-old Matthew Stone Sr., was a grandfather. He killed eight people, including his young grandchildren, while his unborn grandson also died. He also killed his daughter, who was "days away from giving birth," according to a Sunday (October 11) report from the New York Post.
Mass Shooter Kills Pregnant Daughter in Violent Spree
Per Erie News Now, Stone was found dead inside the family's home in Erie from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with the gun found near his body.
Per the outlet, the man carried out his murder spree after he opened fire inside the home. He eventually made his way outside to kill two more women. He later went back into the family home where he took his own life.
Among the identified victims was his own daughter, 24-year-old Angelina Stone. She was days away from her scheduled induction for her third child, Kyrie. The unborn child unfortunately could not be saved. Her other two young children, Isiah (5) and Amari'anna (22 months), also lost their lives in the shooting spree. Of the eight people Stone shot and killed, six were members of his immediate family. His unborn grandson also died.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah called the murder scene "horrific," and added, "It was the worst scene I have ever experienced."
Julius Windham, who shared daughter Amari'anna with Angelina, said he is struggling to process the loss of his daughter and child's mother. His sister Lisa Simmers says that the family has had to stop him from harming himself in the aftermath.
"Although he paints a happy face on, we had to stop him from trying to hurt himself. That was the only child, and she didn't even make it to two. She didn't get to live her life because somebody dimmed her light out," Simmers said (via WTAE).
Police have not identified a motive behind the shooting.
