George Strait had to make space in his crowded trophy case last Friday (Oct. 25) after receiving the Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment at the Medal of Honor Convention's Patriot Award Gala in Tampa, Fla.
The award, established in 2003 by President George W. Bush to commemorate Hope's 100th birthday and issued b the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, honors entertainers who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the United States military through film, literature or music.
Strait adds to a list of winners from the world of country music that already included Trace Adkins, Billy Ray Cyrus and the Oak Ridge Boys.

Strait's ninth annual Vaqueros del Mar golf tournament and benefit concert was held near San Antonio on Oct. 22-23. This year's event raised a reported $2.2 million for Feherty's Troops First Foundation, an organization benefiting wounded military service men and women. This year's performers included Texas country artists Ray Benson & Asleep at the Wheel, Randy Houser and Randy Rogers as well as one of Nashville's best singer-songwriters, Jamey Johnson.
In addition, Strait supports other uniformed officers through efforts connected to his latest single, "The Weight of the Badge." The co-write with son Bubba Strait and songwriting legend Dean Dillon honors the sacrifices of first responders. It became Strait's 100th entry on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. The song appears on 2019 album Honky Tonk Time Machine.
