A 1977 George Jones Single Addressed King Kong's Feud With Godzilla

It's ridiculous, but it's true: George Jones shared a musical opinion about the recurring cinematic battle between King Kong and Godzilla.

Sammy Lyons penned "Old King Kong," which references the 1933 film King Kong and 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla. It tells of a love larger than a classic silver screen menace.

Lyons (often billed as S Lyons) is better known as the writer of Jones and Tammy Wynette duets "We Go Together" and "We're Putting It Back Together."

"Old King Kong" cracked country music's Top 40 and appeared on Jones' 1977 Epic Records release I Wanta Sing. The abomination on the cover is way scarier than any movie monster, but that's a different discussion.

Seriously, it's an under-appreciated album, with "They've Got Millions in Milwaukee" and the single "If I Could Put Them All Together (I'd Have You)" as standout tracks.

In all likelihood, Jones and producer Billy Sherrill selected "Old King Kong" as a single in an attempt to build off the Top 5 success of the equally light-hearted yet chillingly lonesome "Her Name Is..."

So, adding a song that mentions Kong and Gozilla's original big screen battle to the same playlist as "He Stopped Loving Her Today," "The Grand Tour," "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" and "Bartender's Blues" makes more sense than you might've suspected.

"Old King Kong" Lyrics

Well old King Kong was a hell of'va gorilla
He stood four stories tall
They shot him with missiles from aeroplanes
But he refused to fall
With Faye Wray in the palm of his hand
He walked right over the world
'Cause just like me he would do anything
Just to keep his girl

Yeah, old King Kong was just a little monkey
Compared to my love for you
If you treat right, every night
And to do what you wanted to
I said it's bigger than both of us
And now you know it's true
Old King Kong was just a little monkey
Compared to my love for you

Now when King Kong met Godzilla
He made that lizard crawl
It wasn't until he put his woman down
That she saw those big tears fall
And when you're walking next to me
I swear I can fill his shoes
Old King Kong was just a little monkey
Compared to my love for you

Yeah, old King Kong was just a little monkey
Compared to my love for you
If you treat right, every night
And to do what you wanted to
I said it's bigger than both of us
And now you know it's true
Old King Kong was just a little monkey
Compared to my love for you

Yeah old King Kong was just a little monkey
Compared to my love for you
