When speaking with The Athletic about signing with the Superhawks, Porter cited the need to support his young family.

"I am just trying to do what I can to provide for my family," Porter said.

The USBL was recently re-launched, having not operated since 2008. The professional league will feature eight teams spread throughout the country, including franchises in Baltimore and San Diego.

Porter's lifetime ban was confirmed by the NBA in April 2024. The league issued a statement regarding its decision.

"A league investigation found that Porter violated league rules by disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games," the statement said.

An investigation regarding Porter found that he'd "placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using an associate's online betting account." He had spent time with the Toronto Raptors and their G League affiliate, the Raptors 905, during that season.

Porter has since tried to play professional basketball abroad; however, a federal judge denied his request.

Jontay Porter's Brother Has Spoken of Jontay's Gambling Issues

On August 8, 2025, Jontay Porter's brother, Michael Porter Jr, who is also in the NBA and currently playing for the Brooklyn Nets, addressed Jontay's gambling issues on his "Curious Mike" YouTube channel.

"Everybody struggles with something," Porter Jr. said. "For some, it's alcohol. For others, it's drugs. My brother, for example, struggled with gambling. My own vice has always been women...My brother Jontay never struggled with women, but he did with gambling. I never struggled with gambling, and maybe that's why God blessed me with money, because He knew I could handle it. Jonte, on the other hand, wasn't blessed with a lot of money because maybe God knew he couldn't handle that temptation."

Jontay Porter is currently awaiting sentencing on his criminal charges surrounding the betting scandal.
