The outlet reveals that Lazzaro was driving to the hunting range. He was attempting to help a fellow soldier who was having an issue with their vehicle. A spokesperson called the incident a "tragic hunting accident.

"We deeply mourn the loss of  U.S. Army Sgt. Thomas Lazzaro of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne)," Col. Patrick Nelson said in a statement shared with Task & Purpose. "We will never forget his dedication, courage, and commitment to safeguarding our freedoms. His absence leaves a void that will be felt professionally and personally among those who had the honor of working with Thomas."

A tribute posted in Emerald Coast Funeral Home details how Lazzaro joined the United States Army after graduating from college. He followed the steps of his father and grandfather. Lazzaro completed 32 live-fire exercises and helped organize ODA training concepts across the country.

"Sergeant Lazzaro was a true leader and an inspiration to his team," reads the tribute. "Tommy's courage, dedication, and love will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him."

A Quarterback

Before he became the quarterback at Central Michigan University (CMU), Tommy Lazzaro led his football time at Pine Creek High School to win two Colorado State Championships in 2013 and 2014. He then played at Dodge City Community College for one season. Finally, he would then move to CMU where he played as a starting quarterback winning the 2024 MAC Football Championship. Eventually, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business.

"When we took over the program, Tommy was truly our leader in so many ways," head coach Jim McElwain said. "CMU Football was blessed to have him and will always remember him for all he did for many of us."

A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, December 28, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, where he will receive full military honors.
