The Boulder County Coroner's Office released Ponder's autopsy report, which has been widely reported, including by ESPN.
According to the report, Ponder's blood alcohol level was .167. The legal limit is 0.08, with a lower threshold of 0.05 for driving while ability impaired.
His death has been officially ruled an accident.
Reports indicate that Ponder lost control of his 2023 Tesla while navigating a curve. The vehicle struck a guardrail before hitting an electrical pole and rolling down an embankment.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 6-foot-5 sophomore from Florida appeared in two games for the Buffaloes last season. He previously played for Bethune-Cookman during his freshman year before transferring to Colorado.
Family Calls for Awareness Following Tragic Loss
In the wake of Ponder's passing, friends have created a GoFundMe to support his family. As of April 8, the page had raised $15,000 of a $100,000 target.
"We are still trying to process it," the description reads. "Dom was genuine. That is the word we keep coming back to."
"All proceeds will go directly to his parents to help with funeral expenses and to support them during this incredibly difficult time."
The message concluded with: "We will carry his smile with us for the rest of our lives. We love you Dom."
Ponder's mother, Catrina Hughes, has called for greater awareness around responsible decision-making, urging young adults to be supported in making better choices.
She emphasized that "one bad decision can alter everything."
"Kids need to know that it's OK to intervene, do anything you can do, one small decision can save a life," Hughes added. "Don't be afraid even if it's uncomfortable. A difficult conversation is easier than a lifetime of loss."
Ponder's family has also launched a foundation named "Dominiq Ponder 7/22."
The organization aims to support student-athletes, children's hospitals, and families facing medical challenges, while also promoting responsible decision-making.
