A nurse from Florida pled guilty to stealing patients' fentanyl pain meds and switching them with saline solution. 40-year-old Emmanuel Valentin will serve over two years in prison for tampering with consumer products. This is according to a press release from the US Attorney's Office of the Southern District of Florida.

Nurse Imprisoned For Replacing Stolen Pain Meds With Saline
Valentin admitted to the charge on December 13 for the crimes that occurred between July 10, 2023, and August 18, 2023. While working at a Miami hospital's cardiac catheterization lab, Valentin extracted liquid painkillers using a syringe. He would then put them in vials for personal use, replacing them with saline solution.
What's even worse is that the release revealed Valentin replaced the vials of saline using discarded vials. These came from biohazard waste bins, exposing patients "to the risk of unnecessary pain."
The former nurse also risked exposing them to contracting Hepatitis C alongside other blood-borne diseases. The good news is that after the hospital fired Valentin, they tested all the patients and found no infections.
During a separate state prosecution on May 15, 2024, Valentin admitted to stealing fentanyl from another Miami hospital in March 2023. This is a terrifying case for anyone who has been in pain at the hospital. The thought of someone tampering with your pain meds and exposing you to infections is horrifying.
Now a year later, this former nurse is facing punishment, albeit extremely light punishment, for swapping and stealing. Even though saline is safe to ingest in small doses, it certainly isn't safe when mixed with biohazardous vials.
Some people will do anything to get their hands on fentanyl. It's a common pain relief opioid and anesthetic used on patients when they recover from painful surgeries. Like any opioid, consumers of this pain reliever can easily become addicted.
Medical workers stealing products from their work isn't as uncommon as you'd think either. Just last month, police caught a dentist from Texas possessing over 100 laughing gas cans. Not only that, but he was huffing the nitrous oxide while driving.
