According to authorities via Fox 13 News, Joseph Voigt had enough of his father "riding his a--" about getting a job and doing something with himself that wasn't playing video games. According to the police, Joseph fled his home after shooting his parents.
It was his mother, Susan Voigt, 58, who called the police after the shooting. She was suffering a gunshot wound to the head. When police arrived, her husband, Marvin Voigt, 63, was lying dead in the driveway. The mother survived and has been treated for her grievous injury.
Joseph had fled the scene, likely out of panic with no real plan, say police. The authorities sent out a BOLO for Polk County and the surrounding areas, according to WDBJ7. Police found the suspect at the International Drive in Orlando, where they promptly arrested him.
Son Arrested For Killing Parents As He Wanted To Continue Playing Video Games
Monday morning, Joseph Voigt appeared in front of a judge. He was given no bond on both of his charges, first-degree murder and attempted murder.
This harrowing event isn't the first of Joseph Voigt's offenses, although police say they were surprised at this horrific act.
Court records show that Voigt was arrested in October last year for discharging a gun 15 times into the ground in a residential area due to alleged boredom. Additionally, he appeared in front of cops the week before he shot his parents when he maced two strangers.
The troubled man one-upped his previous incidents with this one, however.
The Bartow Police Chief, who spoke to Fox 13, said, "The wife lost her husband, and basically lost her son also, at the end of the day. So, it's gonna be a real tough road for her. I feel really bad for her."
Joseph Voigt will now likely face a very long time in prison. Talk about a game over.
