The post also confirmed that the medical examiner's office was working to retrieve the remains. Once finished with their work, they should be able to identify the person behind the skull and bones. According to People, officers certified that they were human remains and not those of an animal.

The man who discovered the bones, Phillip Morfin, spoke with FOX 13 News about the eerie incident. Morfin said he was fishing in a channel that led to the "big pond." That's when he noticed something odd in the mud just a few feet from the channel's shore.

Right away, the look of a skull came to mind, but he supposed that it belonged to an animal. "I'm looking at it, and [it] looked like a bone or the back of a skull," he said to the outlet. "I thought it was a dog skull or something."

When Morfin grabbed it with his fishing rod, he got a better look at it and realized it looked more like a human skull. "So I reach out with my fishing pole and I rolled it over, pulled it towards me and two eye sockets and the teeth I saw," he recalled.

The fisherman described the moment of recognition as "pretty disturbing." He also hopes that the authorities discover who the skull belonged to.

As soon as he realized what it was, he unhooked the lure, dropped his rod, and fled to his truck to call 911. The cops mentioned how often they get calls about human remains that end up being something else entirely.

"I said, 'No, there's no mistaking what I saw, it was a human skull,'" he said to the police. The fisherman then listed a few other bones they found near the skull. There were a few femur bones and what looked like a large arm bone.

The police department's spokesperson who contacted People, Roxeanne Vainuku, gave more details on the remains. "I know that we were dealing mainly with bones, so that could indicate time," said Vainuku. "It could indicate levels of exposure, it could indicate animals in the area having made contact with the bones."
