When the band first came out, and their wild rock music shook the world, Christians listened in fear. Back in the day, people thought that rock music was the sound of the devil. Because of this, there was early speculation that AC/DC stood for Anti-Christ / Devils Child. Obviously, that was nonsense.
In an interview with VH1, Malcolm Young shared the innocent origins of the band's name. It was something they spied on the back of his sister's sewing machine. The plug on the back of it had the words AC/DC written on it, and that was that.
The words stand for the two types of current that are used in electronic appliances. It was as simple as that. There were no demonic secret messages, just a bit of electronic terminology. The plug also had a symbol of a lightning bolt on it, completing the band's name.
The Bands Name Came Like A Bolt Of Inspiration
According to Malcolm, "We were tossing around names for weeks, and she (his sister) just said it one night, and everyone went, 'That's good." The name is now one of the most recognizable of any rock band in the world. Their sound has traveled across the globe and been a part of multiple generations' lives.
Despite a few members being switched out and even a change of lead singer, AC/DC never lost their touch. The sound of AC/DC has been used in everything from movies to sports events. It is packed with electrical energy, just giving their name more relevance.
Even now, AC/DC is still being played. Their Spotify numbers are something to behold with over 5 million streams daily. Some things will be listened to forever, and the rocking tunes of the 70s band are certainly one of them.
It's funny to think that their name comes from something so normal. There was little more meaning to it than just random chance. The influence of a sewing machine gave a name to one of the biggest rock bands of all time.
