Family Sues Funeral Home After It Allegedly Cremated Woman Against Wishes

There are some professions and areas of expertise where mistakes can be hard, maybe impossible, to rectify. Errors made by funeral homes are like that. You are going through the devastating loss of a loved one. Therefore, you need the funeral home you use to follow your or your relative's wishes to the letter. However, according to one Ohio family, that did not happen to their beloved late mother. They claim that Nancy Anders was actually allegedly cremated by mistake, per People.

That, they say, was not what she wanted, so they are reportedly taking legal action. Anders' children are asserting that she was cremated "against her express wishes and without authorization from the family" by the Hilliard-based Tidd Funeral Home. That is according to legal documents quoted by the outlet.

Nancy Anders Allegedly Carefully Planned Her Funeral Arrangements

According to People, Anders, 83, knew exactly what she wanted done after her death on May 28, 2025. Her husband, John, pre-deceased her. She evidently wished to be laid to rest with him at Union Cemetery.

Per the lawsuit described by the outlet, "Her requests were meticulously detailed as to the placement of their bodies, her hands, and the clothes to be worn. Cremation was never an option as it was expressly contrary to her personal beliefs."

There Was a Temporary Delay

However, before Nancy Anders could be buried in the coffin with her husband, a probate court had to sign off on the arrangement. Her family claims that the funeral home was allegedly aware of the temporary hitch. They reportedly said "the delay would not be an issue and that their mother's body could be kept at their facility for an extended period of time."

Nevertheless, just 10 days afterward, Anders' family was aghast to learn that she "had been cremated against her express wishes and without authorization from the family," according to language in their lawsuit mentioned by the outlet.

Her Family Says They Are Suffering as a Result

Finding out that their mom was cremated has reportedly been a nightmare for the Anders family. They are allegedly coping with insomnia, sickness, and distress. According to them, "...[T]heir mother's final wishes were ignored and...she [was] cremated against her express wishes."
