Ex-Metallica Bassist Jason Newsted recently spent time on The Drive with Steve Jaxon radio show playing some country tunes. His set included music from John Prine, Doug Seegers and Willie Nelson. Newsome is currently on tour with his new group, The Chophouse Band.
Here are his renditions of "Bear Creek Blues, "Down to the River" and "Roll Me Up and Smok Me When I Die."
Newsted says that he first became interested in country music when his mother became ill during the summer of 2014. Throughout his mother's illness, he spent time learning and playing the music for her. Her reactions to the songs he played for her caused him to have the desire to learn more and more that he could play for her.
The Chophouse Band play a variety of musical styles. The band isn't planning on recording a country album. Even though they have around a dozen original songs, they prefer to keep things like they are. Newsome says that he wants to take his time with the band and keep it a grassroots operation.
