A price hike for sending letters has been proposed. This will see a five-cent increase to the first class 'Forever' stamp, with increases seen for postcards, metered letters, and international mail also. The increased cost is looking to be set for July 13th.
The proposed increase to the price of postage with USPS has to first be accepted by the Postal Regulatory Commission. If it goes ahead, then the proposed price hike will come into effect across all USPS mail.
Postal Price Hike A Priority For Profit
The USPS has argued that the repeated price hikes are essential if they want to remain as a functioning non-privatized service. Former U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has previously spoken about the cost of the USPS. He stated that if people expect the service to continue, they are going to have to get used to some "uncomfortable" price increases.
The model currently in place is outdated and financially defective. There need to be some serious changes if it hopes to continue and remain out of debt. With the decline of first-class mail, the $78 billion-a-year government agency has been struggling to stay afloat.
Many people have stopped sending mail, with the majority of their trade coming from Amazon packages. Outside of parcels, there aren't a lot of people using first-class stamps. There have been some serious changes to the way the post is used. I, personally, cannot remember the last time I received a letter.

If the USPS intends to keep its head above water, price hikes and some serious reshuffles will be in order.
