ESPN has begun its latest round of staff layoffs. Shockingly, Ryan Clark, one of the faces of "NFL Live" has become one of the first casualties. Clark found out about being laid off during a Monday, July 20 episode.

"Clark was on ESPN's "NFL Live" on Monday. He was informed of the decision during the show, said the sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter," The Athletic reports. "Clark did not finish the program."
The Athletic continued by sharing information they'd obtained as to why Clark was informed of their decision during the show.
"Sources at ESPN say the reason they told Clark during the show was due to media inquiries into his departure and a fear that the news would leak out before they could inform him. Since after the Super Bowl in February, sources had told The Athletic that Clark's job could be in jeopardy."
The decision to part with Clark, so close to the 2026 NFL season, is certainly a bold choice. According to The New York Post, ESPN executives had "soured" on Clark, who was earning a seven-figure salary.
What's even more shocking is that ESPN has made this decision ahead of the season, when it will host the Super Bowl.
Ryan Clark Enjoyed a 13-Year NFL Career
Before building a career analyzing football, Clark spent 13 years competing on the gridiron. He entered the NFL in 2002, joining the New York Giants. Clark spent two seasons in New York, playing a total of 22 games as a defensive back.
In 2004, Clark moved to Washington, spending two seasons as a strong safety, playing a total of 28 times for the franchise. In 2006, Clark moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he spent 8 seasons playing as a free safety. During his time in Pittsburgh, Clark made the 2011 Pro Bowl team.
In 2014, at the age of 35, Clark moved back to Washington for one final season. He played in 16 games, starting 15 of them, before ultimately calling time on his professional career.
Now, following ESPN's decision to part ways, Clark must figure out what his next chapter is going to look like.
