“I Apologize. Oh, My God”: Stephen A. Smith Has a “Charlie Kirk” Slip of the Tongue on ESPN, Instantly Regrets It

Stephen A. Smith made the slip when discussing the Texans during a live episode of ESPN's First Take on Tuesday, January 13

Christian Kirk played a significant role in helping the Houston Texans defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday. The wide receiver had eight receptions for 144 yards and scored a touchdown to complete his solid night.

However, on Tuesday, Kirk was back in the news cycle, this time for very different reasons. During an episode of ESPN's First Take, Stephen A. Smith made a mistake when talking about him live on TV. Rather than calling him by his name, Smith accidentally referred to Christian as Charlie Kirk, the recently deceased political activist.

"That's what we saw Charlie Kirk catch eight receptions for 144 yards," Smith said before realizing his mistake. "We saw... Christian Kirk."

To his credit, Smith was quick to apologize upon realizing his error.

"I'm sorry, Christian. I'm sorry. I apologize. I apologize. Oh, my God. Christian Kirk."

Charlie Kirk was among the most polarizing figures in America. In truth, he still is. Therefore, the slip was likely to have a mixed reaction, regardless of the innocent nature and the immediate apology.

Nevertheless, Smith is a professional, and if needs be, he will undoubtedly address the mistake, most likely on his eponymous podcast.

The Houston Texans Are Having a Solid Season

It's been a good season so far for the Texans. They finished second in the AFC South, one loss behind the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have won 13 and lost 4. Houston is currently riding the wave of a nine-game win streak, courtesy of a 7-2 home record and 5-3 road record.

With the wild card game in their rearview, the Texans are certainly looking to continue building momentum, which is why their win over the AFC North-leading Steelers came at the perfect time.

Kirk had a relatively quiet season for the Texans this year with just 28 receptions, but ultimately saved his best for the postseason.

However, he will likely be hoping that Smith can avoid any more slip-ups, especially if he has another big moment during the wildcard game or potentially the playoffs.
