Eric Church Donates $10K to 10-Year-Old Girl's School Fundraiser

Makenna Wallace landed quite the celebrity sponsor for her school's jog-a-thon fundraiser when country star Eric Church cut a check for $10,000 to Soulsbyville Elementary School.

Wallace, age 10, brought a green sign asking for financial support to Church's recent concert in San Francisco. Church, impressed by Wallace's aviator sunglasses and her initiative, agreed from stage to donate.

"As her parents we were like, 'go for it,' but it was only kind of an idea," said her mother Megan Wallace to local paper The Union Democrat. "When it happened, it was unbelievable. We were in shock. It was surreal. We were so proud of her, we just kept telling her."

Per The Union Democrat, Wallace and her classmates have been raising funds for a new playground at the school. Before Church and his wife Katherine's generous donation, Wallace had raised $735 by running three miles' worth of laps.

"If I could say anything to him I would say, thank you, you're my hero, stuff like that," Makenna Wallace told The Union Democrat. "I was just like, 'Oh my gosh this is really happening? I was really shaky. I was happy, nervous, it was awesome."

Church's donation covers a chunk of the $25,000 goal set for the fundraiser. The school raised $50,000 before the jog-a-thon began, with a goal of $100,000 to be raised before replacing its playground.

The good deed came at a busy time for Church. The North Carolina native will take a break from his hectic tour schedule on Nov. 13 to find out if he wins one of country music's highest honors, the CMA Entertainer of the Year award.
