On Wednesday, around 2 am, four individuals left the Byblos Hookah Bar in downtown Philadelphia. One of them, a 22-year-old unidentified male, was set to enter the Uber that was already waiting for him. As he opened the door to the black Chevy Suburban, an armed assailant attacked him.
CCTV footage went viral online, and was later obtained by NBC10. In the video, you watch as one of the armed thugs grabs hold of the passenger before opening fire. In the onslaught, the passenger got shot in the arm, leg, and abdomen, and is currently being treated in hospital.
The assailants fled. During the shooting, a (likely stray) bullet struck the Uber driver in the head. Olatunji W. Bolaji, 77, was waiting in his car when the attackers opened fire. Despite getting shot in the head, he managed to continue driving momentarily to escape before striking a lamppost a block away.
Olatunji was pronounced dead at the scene when officers arrived. They then took the passenger to Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition.
Armed Attackers Who Killed Uber Driver Still On The Loose
The suspects who attacked the Uber driver and passenger remain at large. They have not been identified, although we have a detailed description of their vehicle.
The assailants fled in a black Jeep Grand Cherokee with Massachusetts plates. The police are offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of the shooters.
If you know or see anything, please contact the police.
Those who knew Bolaji are devastated by his death.
Neighbors and family are "saddened" by the death of the "nice," "hardworking," and "quiet" man. They want justice for his "senseless murder," and are "heartbroken."
Uber also provided a statement about Bolaji's death. "Our hearts break for the driver's family and loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss. We've reached out to police to offer our support as they work to bring those responsible for this heinous act of violence to justice."
The current condition of the 22-year-old passenger is unknown. Considering the rapid response, it is likely he will pull through the traumatic attack.
