Three people were tragically killed when a 100-foot tree was overturned by high winds during a holiday egg hunt, which took place Sunday morning in Germany. A 10-month-old girl was among the victims.
According to authorities, around 50 people from a nearby residential facility were estimated to be in attendance. This number includes several new mothers, pregnant women, and children. The event took place in a wooded area in the town of Satrupholm, mid-morning local time on Sunday, April 5.
What Happened During the Easter Egg Hunt?
Four people were pinned underneath the fallen tree, according to the New York Post. Included were a 16-year-old girl and a 21-year-old mother. They were then treated by first responders. Sadly, both died at the scene.
The 10-month-old daughter of the mother was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
An 18-year-old woman, who was also injured during the incident, was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter and suffered serious injuries.
Officials Are "Deeply Shaken"
Counselors were at the scene in the hours after the tragic incident to help residents deal with the grief surrounding the tragedy.
The facility supports pregnant women and new mothers who need assistance. It is part of the state-funded child welfare system.
Images from the scene showed Easter eggs and candy scattered across the ground. Two of the victims were covered in white sheets.
A high-winds warning was issued for the area by the German weather service.
Several officials from the area where the facility is located issued a joint statement to news agencies regarding the tragedy. Regional Governor Daniel Günther, Interior Minister Magdalena Finke, and Youth and Families Minister Aminata Touré said they were "deeply shaken" by what had happened.
The statement read, "Our thoughts are with the family members of the dead, with the injured, and with everyone who had to experience this terrible occurrence."
