Driver Sentenced Over The Death of Dixie Chicks Co-Founder

Domenick Chavez has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The 33-year-old Texan pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter after his involvement in the 2023 crash that led to the death of Dixie Chicks founding member, bassist Laura Lynch. The group is now known as The Chicks.

Chavez's sentence was then reduced after he admitted to traveling over 100 mph. He was behind the wheel of a Dodge Ram when he collided head-on with the 65-year-old Lynch, who was driving east in a Ford F-150 in Hudspeth County, Texas. The accident occurred near Cornudas, between El Paso and Dell City.

Lynch died instantly on Dec. 22, 2023.

Chavez Had A Suspended License

The New York Post reports that when Chavez's vehicle collided with Lynch's, he was driving under a suspended license. He had been convicted twice for driving while intoxicated. He was attempting to swerve around four cars on the highway at a speed between 106 and 114 mph.

The truck driven by Chavez burst into flames because of the collision. He was then hospitalized with "non-life-threatening" injuries. Investigators stated the driver was not under the influence but had been speeding at the time of the crash.

"The death of Ms. Lynch caused profound sadness for her family, the Dell City community, and all those who appreciated her music," said James Montoya, the district attorney in El Paso, regarding the incident. "It is a loss made more acute by the fact that it happened just days before Christmas. Our office will continue to hold accountable those defendants who choose to drive in an extremely dangerous manner."

The Chicks Were Devasted by the Loss of Lynch

At the time of her death, The Chicks shared a statement paying tribute to Lynch's music and influence on the band.

"Laura was a bright light...her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band," read the message. "Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas and was instrumental in the early success of the band. Her undeniable talents helped propel us beyond busking on street corners to stages all across Texas and the mid-West."

Lynch co-founded The Chicks in 1989 in Dallas, Texas, with Robin Lynn Macy and sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer. Lynch then left the group around 1995. She was replaced by singer Natalie Maines. The rest is history.
