Recent closures have been making headlines across the land, with Dollar General and Walgreens leading the list of retailer stores shutting down locations.

Dollar General has faced a significant decline in its store openings. The discount chain, which opened 72 stores in the summer of 2024, has now reversed its momentum. In January, the company closed 27 stores and opened just nine. This marks a dramatic shift from the previous year when they only closed five stores after opening more than 60. In total, Dollar General closed 82 locations in January.
Walgreens has also struggled, closing 36 stores across the East Coast, South, and Midwest in January. The company opened just one new location during the same period. In November and December, Walgreens shut down 58 and 12 stores, respectively. Combining January's closures for both Walgreens and Dollar General, 109 stores were shut down.
The retail sector, in general, has been facing tough times, with several companies reporting lower-than-expected numbers, as relayed by Supermarket News. The situation has raised concerns about the viability of large chains as the retail landscape shifts.
More Stores Shutting Doors
Meanwhile, Forever 21, once a fast-fashion powerhouse, is also in the process of closing locations. The company recently confirmed it will close 200 stores as part of its bankruptcy proceedings.
This will reduce its retail footprint to fewer than 400 stores, down from a peak of over 800. Forever 21 was purchased by Authentic Brands Group and Simon Property Group in 2020.
Authentic Brands CEO Jamie Salter admitted during a news conference that acquiring Forever 21 was "probably the biggest mistake I made." The brand, known for trendy and affordable clothing, has struggled to keep pace with the rapidly changing retail environment.
In Boise, Idaho, Forever 21 confirmed the closure of its location at Boise Towne Square Mall. An employee told BoiseDev that the store is already beginning its liquidation process. The closure further emphasizes the challenges facing traditional retail chains in a highly competitive market.
With these closures, the retail sector faces a critical turning point as it adapts to shifting consumer habits and an increasingly digital marketplace.
