I've read many stories over the years about accountants and managers of wealthy stars who quietly used their access to steal these clients' hard-earned money. However, comedian Dane Cook's tale of alleged betrayal is even more searing. He was reportedly bilked out of millions by his own half-brother, Darryl McCauley. He was Cook's business manager. Per Fox News Digital, Cook suffered emotionally as well as in his depleted bank account. He revisited the sad situation in a new documentary called Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story.

McCauley Allegedly Grabbed a Fortune From Cook
Per the outlet, Darryl McCauley was arrested 18 years ago for stealing $3 million from Dane Cook. Then authorities looked into the matter more deeply. It was determined that McCauley's actual haul was more like almost $12 million. In fact, he allegedly secreted the swiped dough in spaghetti sauce jars.
For Cook, it was an agonizing discovery. "It was the scarlet letter of humiliation that I felt like he branded on me." He acknowledged the intense pain McCauley caused him. "It was like, forget about all the, you know, the criminal, all of it. It's like, he knew I was the kid on the playground with the terrible cystic acne who hated myself and ... self-loathing, and like, a lot of stuff that I guess as adults we feel like it's woe is me, but it was very real to me and it was hard."
Cook Felt Ashamed
Dane Cook was upfront with the outlet about the private misery he endured. It seemingly exacerbated the awful torment he lived with as a kid. "Publicly, I'm the bell[e] of the ball, all the cool stuff that's happening there, but he knew, only he knew that I'd come home every day after school with panic attacks and dreading the next day having to go to school because I was just so scared of people."
McCauley Eventually Faced the Music in Court
Darryl McCauley did not escape punishment. According to Fox News Digital, "McCauley pleaded guilty in 2010 to multiple counts of larceny, forgery and embezzlement, while his wife, Erika McCauley, also pleaded guilty to larceny charges." Furthermore, the pair were required to make restitution to Cook. However, he waived that for Erika in return for "her participation in the documentary."
Still, though, the pain persists. Cook shared, "It's like, the money can come and go, and fame can come and go, and that's life. There's so many things that are out of your control. But that part that he knew about of me was, like man, he let that happen to me."
He also mentioned this. "I think part of him probably sitting in that courtroom when I read that impact letter was going like, 'Damn, I think he's going to come back stronger from this,' but neither of us knew when at that time, or if."
