Tonight, the Indiana Hoosiers will face off against the Miami Hurricanes in the national title game with college football supremacy on the line. No doubt all eyes will be on the Hoosiers' powerhouse star QB, Fernando Mendoza. Not only did the 22-year-old land the prestigious Heisman trophy, but he has also established himself as a true fan favorite. But his dad, Fernando Mendoza IV, recently snagged some ink of his own for a chivalrous, sweet gesture that he made on behalf of his wife, Fernando's mom. It really showed what a class act he is.

What Mendoza's Father Did in the Stands Days Ago
According to the Daily Mail, Mendoza Sr. did something in the stands recently when the Hoosiers faced off versus Oregon that touched many people. Cameras caught the Mendozas, who were there to support their son, along with other family members. When young Fernando did well on the field, you would have expected his dad to do as others did - jump to his feet in a rush of paternal glee and pride.
But the elder Mendoza did not do that. Instead, he remained calmly seated. There was a reason, however, for his relatively demure reaction to his son's on-the-field prowess.
Why Mendoza Sr. Stayed in His Seat
Per the outlet, it is thought that Mendoza was seated during the joyful celebration due to his wife, Elsa, being in a wheelchair. She has had multiple sclerosis for almost two decades. Mendoza supposedly wanted to refrain from obstructing Elsa's view. Instead, the couple shared a nice little smooch as young Fernando propelled his team to victory.
Elsa Mendoza Wrote a Poignant Published Letter to Her Son
Elsa Mendoza is as generous and warm as her husband apparently is, judging from a loving letter to her son that was published on December 11, 2025, in The Players' Tribune. Saying that Fernando was "the biggest, sweetest boy...a gentle giant," Elsa reminisced about his youth. She mentioned his adoration of New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and his childhood love of football.
Elsa wrote that she was reluctant to worry Fernando by telling him about her MS diagnosis. With the greatest gratitude and maternal affection, she wrote to him, "You made me feel seen... you've never once looked away."
There is more to being a champ than just putting more points on a scoreboard than your opponent. Fernando Mendoza is a real champion. And you can see where his character comes from - his exceptional mom and dad.
