The Couple Filmed the Rockslide

As the New York Post reports, Bailee and Emerson Hamilton have lived near Provo Canyon for over a decade. While driving through the area, a large section of rock broke loose and rolled down the hillside below Bridal Veil Falls, a popular tourist spot.

The couple captured the incident on video. They said they were worried about hikers and walkers who might have been in the rockslide's path.

"We're up this canyon almost every day... and we know how much traffic, foot traffic, there is, especially on a Friday afternoon," Emerson told reporters. "So, our first reaction was, oh no, there's got to be people in its path."

Bailee said these were large boulders. They checked whether anyone was hurt and helped emergency crews reach the scene.

The Hamiltons stopped at Nunns Park and saw rocks on the pedestrian walkway, then heard a second rockslide start.

"We both turned around and ran as fast as we could away from it until we were kind of a safe distance," said Bailee.

Were There Any Injuries?

The Utah County Government shared an update on Friday, Oct. 23, after inspecting the area around Bridal Veil Falls. Thankfully, no one was injured.

The trail was scheduled to close for the season soon, but the rockslide moved the closure up. The area will stay closed throughout the winter, and crews will clean up the damage in the spring.

According to an announcement by the Utah County Sheriff's Office yesterday, Oct. 26, these areas are now closed to the public:

  • The road between the lower and upper parking lots at Bridal Veil Falls is closed because of construction on the park at the base of the falls, across the river.
  • The trail is closed from the falls to the lower parking lot at the Nunns Park turn-off from Highway 189.
  • The upper overlook parking lot will stay open until Nov. 1, when it closes for the winter.
