The pair, identified as Rafael Seirafe-Novaes and Beatriz Rapoport De Campos Maia, were reportedly running late for their flight to Cancun when tensions escalated with airport personnel. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, the altercation turned physical, with one of the suspects throwing coffee in the face of an American Airlines employee.
The confrontation occurred just before the flight's scheduled departure, causing a disturbance at the gate. Video footage obtained by NBC Miami shows several police cars arriving on the tarmac near American Airlines Flight 2494. The footage captures the chaos as law enforcement responded to the situation. Miami-Dade Sheriff's deputies were seen surrounding the scene just moments before the flight was set to take off.
At least six deputies were reported to have responded to the incident. The couple's behavior, which disrupted the boarding process, led to their arrest. Seirafe-Novaes, one of the suspects, was charged with resisting an officer without violence and trespassing. Maia, the other suspect, was charged with two counts of battery and trespassing. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office confirmed the arrests, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges.
Airport Safety Emphasized
American Airlines swiftly condemned the behavior in a statement to CBS News Miami. "Acts of violence are not tolerated by American Airlines," the statement read.
They also pledged to cooperate fully with law enforcement during the investigation. In addition, an airport spokesperson informed NBC that the sheriff's office is handling the ongoing investigation into the incident.
This latest episode highlights the increasing problem of disruptive behavior among passengers at airports. As travel resumes in full swing, airlines and authorities are stressing the importance of maintaining safety and order in the airport environment. In other words, passengers are being reminded to adhere to airport policies and avoid confrontations.
You'd think that goes without saying, but hey, this is 2025.
