During yesterday's episode of Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, the "You Had To Be There" singer shared with the comedian why he doesn't like to talk about politics.
Kenny Chesney Asked Bill Maher About Springsteen
The conversation turned to politics (or, in this case, away from politics) when Chesney asked Maher if he was a fan of Bruce Springsteen, as both the "Born to Run" singer and the comedian hail from New Jersey.
Maher admitted his love for The Boss, but then seemed to regret thinking of Springsteen in a political context. The feud between the singer and President Donald Trump has made headlines in recent months.
Chesney then told Maher that he was "thankful" when he appeared on his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, in November of last year, and that he didn't want to talk about politics.
"I've just never felt like it was my place," said Chesney.
"It's not always everybody's place," replied Maher. "You're right."
Chesney Says It Takes "A Certain Ego" To Talk Politics
Chesney went on to say that talking about politics requires a particular mentality that he just does not have.
"There's a certain ego, I think, that lives in there and a certain box inside your head and your soul that you have to check, for some reason, to think that you can make a difference," he said.
Maher replied, "I think they've actually studied this. When celebrities talk, I think it has the opposite effect."
Chesney agreed, adding, "I've never saw it to be my place to use my stage or platform, no matter where I'm playing, to tell people how to think or how to vote. Like they hear that. They get that everywhere else. Everywhere on every device. Every network. They're there as an escape from all that stuff."
