Carrie Underwood Loves Nu-Metal
The "Before He Cheats" singer stunned fans at the Velocity Festival in Dyersville, Iowa, on Saturday, Sep. 5. The show's setlist included the country music classics from her catalog, along with some unexpected covers.
After a one-two punch of "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and "Hate My Heart," Underwood then shifted her set to some 1990s and 2000s alt-rock classics. First came "Shine," a cover of the 1993 Collective Soul hit. She then performed Papa Roach's "Scars."
Underwood then began head-banging as she performed Linkin Park's "One Step Closer." She ended her short alt-rock set with Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff." She even donned a backward red cap in tribute to the band's divisive frontman, Fred Durst.
But if you were expecting Underwood to drop some F-bombs during that last song, you're going to be sorely disappointed. The American Idol judge kept any of that "he said/she said bulls***" out of her set. You can watch her keep things clean in the clip below.

Before her Iowa show, Underwood shared on Instagram that she flew in early to catch Shinedown at the Velocity Festival. She said it inspired her "to try some new stuff in our set tomorrow."
Of course, Underwood is no stranger to rock. Her theme to NBC's Sunday Night Football is based on Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' "I Hate Myself for Loving You."
She's also performed with Guns N' Roses on numerous occasions. Axl Rose even performed with Underwood at Stagecoach in 2022.
"I've gotten to sing with them, but I would love to record something with Guns N' Roses," Underwood said in 2025. "That would be really cool."
Underwood also performed with Papa Roach in Las Vegas last year. The two also collaborated on the song "Leave the Light On," a song about suicide.
