Wright's cause of death has not been made public, according to PEOPLE. His obituary states he died at his home in Madison, Tennessee, on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
John "Bobby" Wright Came From Country Music Royalty
Wright was born in Charleston, West Virginia, on March 30, 1942. His parents were the country music legends Johnnie Wright and Kitty Wells. They appeared on the television show Louisiana Hayride, and he joined them when he was just 8 years old.
When John and Kitty became headliners at the Grand Ole Opry, the family moved to Nashville in 1958, where John attended Madison High School. There, he was known for both his singing and athletic talent.
But Wright was not initially interested in a music career, so he sought his fortunes in Los Angeles. He was cast as radio operator Willy Moss on McHale's Navy, opposite Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway. Wright was on the sitcom throughout the show's entire run from 1962 through 1966. According to his family, he was the show's last living cast member.
Wright Returned to Tennessee
When McHale's Navy ended, Wright returned to Tennessee. He worked with his mother on one of her albums, then joined the cast of his family's variety show and toured with his parents and sisters as the Kitty Wells Johnnie Wright and Bobby Wright Family Show until 2007.
Wright later became a solo country artist, beginning his career in 1967. Over the course of his career, he charted 21 singles on Billboard's Hot Country Charts. His biggest hit was the 1971 classic "Here I Go Again."
Wright is survived by his two daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister Sue Sturdivant, ex-wife Brenda Wright Moore, and nieces and nephews.
