"Man, COVID — as it did a lot of folks, I've learned over the past month — it screwed me up, man," Moore said. "The stress and the pressure and the anxiety from, you know, worrying about paying my crew and band and all that. It's not an excuse, I'm just telling you what the reasons for me are."
Like most adults, Moore had participated in drinking throughout his adult life. However, he had never dealt with addiction issues. Unfortunately for the country star, that changed when COVID hit. He noted that the pandemic left him in a "vicious cycle that I could not break out of."
Luckily, Moore recognized the changes in his drinking patterns. As such, he began trying to make a change.
"I'd go a couple months and fall off the wagon or whatever," he recalled.
After multiple attempts, where each time he eventually fell off the wagon, something changed for Moore.
"I just came home one night from off the road and told [my wife] Kate, 'I gotta do something. 'Cause this is not who I wanna be," Moore explained. "It's not who I am as a person, and I'm just not happy with myself."
Justin Moore Wants To Remain Open and Honest With His Fanbase
After speaking with his wife, Moore decided to check into a rehab. He also shared how fortunate he was to have love and support from all areas of his life, including his wife and kids, and even members of his band.
Eventually, upon leaving rehab, Moore decided to share his sobriety with his fans. He did so in a very public manner, announcing it on stage.
"I've been really honest with my fanbase for my entire career, which is part of the reason I've had a career in music, a successful one, you know what I mean?" he explained during the interview.
Now, Moore feels like he's doing much better.
"I feel like myself for the first time in a long time, in a year or more, and I'm actually proud of myself for the first time in a year or two."
Hopefully, by sharing his struggles and his journey, Moore can inspire others who are fighting similar battles.
