This Classic Corn Pone Recipe Will Take You Back in Time

Nothing says southern comfort food like a huge helping of corn pone. It's a classic dish that is great with soup, beans and a number of other main courses. Traditionally, sugars are not added to corn pone, but you can customize it around your own particular tastes.

In this video, YouTube user LittleGasthaus creates the best corn pone recipe we have run across in a long time. Here's what you will need to make it at home.

  • 1 ½ cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 ½ cup buttermilk
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup corn
  • ½ cup beans
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Normally, you put these ingredients together and fry your corn pone in a cast iron skillet, but this version opts to use a Dutch oven instead. You can check out the full instructions in this video.

The great thing about corn pone is it is extremely versatile. Much like cornbread, you can eat it with virtually anything and can quickly change up the flavor in many ways. You can add maple syrup, apple or honey to make things a little sweeter. If you prefer baking instead, set the oven to 375 or medium heat and bake in an 8 by 8-inch pan for 40 minutes until golden brown, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Serve up these small cakes with a side of greens or any delicious Southern-inspired main course.

When you take a bite of this warm and delicious bread, you will instantly be taken back to another time when you were sitting around your grandma's kitchen table eating her own rendition of this recipe. Although it's always hard to beat grandma's cooking, this version comes pretty close. So hit the kitchen and experiment with your own version of this delicious recipe.
