According to the George County Sheriff's Office, Drew Johnson, 33, escaped from SMCI (South Mississippi Correctional Institution). Johnson was serving a life sentence for the murder of Calvin Holloway Jr, 25.
The Sheriff's Office posted a mug shot on
Facebook, as well as Johnson's full description. The post explains, "He will be desperate and very dangerous. People tend to be more generous during Christmas and let their guard down. Be vigilant and be careful. Please share this."The Daily Mail reports that Johnson murdered Holloway back in 2016. Holloway left his friends to help a stranded companion at 3:45 am but never returned. His friends reported Johnson missing, and his body was found with multiple stab wounds four days later.
The report explains that police found his truck in Memphis and eventually found the body five miles away.
Johnson's reign of terror continued in prison, where he reportedly killed a cellmate. He also admitted to starting multiple fires in the prison and striking another inmate over the head with a brick.
Johnson Was Captured On Christmas Day
Unfortunately for Johnson, his freedom was short-lived. According to a report by WDAM, the inmate was re-captured on Christmas day. While we don't know specifics, the report says that authorities caught Johnson "near SMCI." As this is where he was trying to escape from in the first place, it's safe to say he didn't get far.
Homeowners near the prison will sleep easier knowing the police re-captured Johson, but some users on Social Media question how the incident even occurred in the first place.
In response to the Sheriff's Office Facebook post, Percy Marsh wrote: "Was the dang prison short-staffed for the holidays? How the heck does this happen these days with all the high-tech stuff they have? No excuse for the prison letting this even happen."
Others blast the level of security at Mississippi prisons, accusing them of corruption. Another Facebook user, Arriella Wilson, alleges that her cousin used to work at the prison. "you'd understand that prison is just bricks and bob wire fence. Been inside before. Nothing high tech. Old high school vibes."
