Fernando Lovo, the director of athletics for the University of Colorado, released a statement regarding Ponder's tragic death.
"The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder," Lovo said in the statement, via ESPN. "He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time."
Ponder joined the Colorado Buffaloes football program as a walk-on, and he spent two seasons for the team. He was likely going to be part of the roster for the 2026 season, too. Ponder was reportedly driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 at the time of the crash.
According to the New York Post, Ponder's car went through a guardrail and struck an electrical line pole. The car then rolled into an embankment, where it caught fire.
"The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Colorado State Patrol's vehicular crimes unit is investigating the crash, with the preliminary investigation indicating that speed is "suspected" to be a factor, the CSP said in its release," the Post reported.
