Colorado State, however, opted for an immediate change after its defense allowed 100 points in its two most recent games.
Colorado State head coach Jim Mora dismissed defensive coordinator Tyson Summers midway through Saturday's blowout loss to Oregon State.
After allowing 1,101 yards in the previous two matchups against BYU and UTSA, the Rams defense got off to another sluggish start on Saturday.
Colorado State gave up 35 points in the first half, prompting Mora to relieve Summers of defensive play-calling duties. Surprisingly, Summers walked off the sideline midway through the contest.

After the game, Mora confirmed that the defensive coordinator change is permanent and that Summers has been fired.
"Tyson was relieved of his playcalling duties. He left the field and is no longer with this football program. That is a permanent [move]," Mora said postgame. "Kenny [McClendon] will be the primary play caller. He was put in a very difficult situation tonight, and he responded well. The players responded well. Very first play he called as a defensive coordinator in his life was a sack that caused a fumble. We're gonna get better. A lot better. He's a good football coach."
Although it is not uncommon for programs to move on from underperforming head coaches or coordinators, firing personnel in the middle of the game is nearly unprecedented.
The sudden dismissal sent the college football community into a social media frenzy.
