Steve Pikiell, Rutgers University's head basketball coach, has shared some unfortunate news with fans. As reported by People, he announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
He announced his diagnosis, as well as how he was "stepping back" from his college coach role, in an open letter on the Scarlet Knights' website.
"A couple of months ago," he wrote, "after not feeling 100%, I visited a team of doctors at RWJBarnabas Health."
"After undergoing various tests, I received the difficult news that I have cancer." Pikiell didn't specify the specific type of cancer doctors diagnosed him with. However, per NJ.com, he has to undergo chemotherapy over the next six months as they monitor him.
He continued his statement by thanking the doctors at the clinic. "I am incredibly grateful to my team of doctors at RWJBarnabas Health and Memorial Sloan Kettering for guiding and supporting us through this difficult time."
In classic college coach fashion, he revealed that, in conjunction with his doctors, he has a "kick-ass game plan to finish treatment." He also explained that he had undergone surgery as a part of his cancer treatment - but also didn't specify what kind of surgery.

The College Coach is Stepping Back
His open letter also revealed that he is stepping back from day to day duties, although he clarified that he will "still be involved with the team to the best of my ability as I navigate the challenges of the season through treatment."
He gave control of the Scarlet Knights to Assistant Head Coach Brandin Knight. "I have great confidence in Coach Knight," he wrote. "[As well as] the rest of our talented staff, and our exceptional student-athletes. I know they will do an amazing job leading our program when I'm not able to," he continued.
Rutgers' Athletics Director Keli Zinn also wrote a statement in support of the college coach. "On behalf of the Rutgers Athletics family, I want to express our love and support for Coach Pikiell, Kate, and their entire family as he fights cancer."
"Those of us know Steve, know the determination and strength he brings to everything he does," Zinn continued. We wish him well in his treatment.
