There Was an Economist Who Swallowed a Fly...
The moment occurred on Saturday, Aug. 8, as University of Michigan professor and economist Justin Wolfers was talking with anchor Omar Jimenez.
The two were talking about the newly released jobs report when Wolfers couldn't stop coughing. Jimenez kept talking as the expert covered his mouth. When the anchor finally asked Wolfers another question, he replied by addressing what had happened.
"Mate, I just swallowed a fly on live television," Wolfers said.
"I was trying to keep talking while you were coughing, so you could figure it out. It's all good," replied Jiminez.
The two laughed about the incident. Wolfers, who is Australian, even made light of the unusual situation.
"Aussies love eating flies," the economist joked.
Wolfers Didn't Die. He Made a Metaphor.
As the conversation about the jobs report and the newly appointed chief at the Federal Reserve progressed, Wolfers compared what just happened to him to the nation's current economic situation.
"It might actually be a metaphor, because the biggest thing going on at the Fed is Kevin Warsh feels like I do right now," he said.
He continued, "Kevin Warsh doesn't feel like talking about what's going on, and it makes both of us a little harder to understand, and a little harder to interpret. So you could think about Kevin as having swallowed the fly as well. I might swallow a horse. That will get the fly."
The economist shared more about the on-air incident on social media.
He wrote, "A fly just zipped into my mouth while gabbing on CNN. Next question was about the Fed, so I did what Kevin Warsh won't—I swallowed hard and kept talking. I figure folks deserve some clarity about the economy."
He then added, "(Postscript: The fly is dead. And I'm no longer a vegetarian.)"
