Jeremiah Kelly, an 18-year-old college football player, died unexpectedly early Tuesday at his residence, the University of Cincinnati athletic department announced. The incoming freshman offensive lineman was said to have left a profound mark in his short time with the Bearcats. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death.
Kelly enrolled at Cincinnati in January, fresh off leading Ohio's Avon High School Eagles to a 16-0 record and a state championship. The Ohio native shone brightly, earning first-team all-conference and all-district honors. He also claimed the SWC Lineman of the Year title as a senior. As a three-star recruit in the Class of 2025, Kelly committed to the Bearcats last June, according to 247Sports.
He completed his first spring training with the team just last week.
"The Bearcats football family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of this outstanding young man," head coach Scott Satterfield said. "In the short time Jeremiah has spent with our team, he has made a real impact, both on the field and in our locker room. My prayers are with the Kelly family and those who had the pleasure of knowing Jeremiah."
The University of Cincinnati, alma mater of NFL stars Travis and Jason Kelce, now mourns one of its own. Athletic Director John Cunningham expressed deep sorrow. "We've suffered a heartbreaking loss today," he said. "All of us at UC send our love and prayers to the Kelly family, and we will do everything that we can to support them and our Bearcats student-athletes in the difficult days and weeks ahead."
Kelly's death sent ripples through the campus and beyond. Teammates, coaches, and fans remember him as a dedicated athlete and vibrant spirit.
Meanwhile, the university has pledged to rally around Kelly's family and the team. Support services are mobilizing to help students and athletes cope with the loss, school officials said.
Per WKYC News in Cleveland: "The Hamilton County Coroner's Office confirmed to 3News that they are investigating his death, noting that an autopsy will be performed on Wednesday."
