Roads in Langley, Virginia, have been shut down after an incident involving a reported gunman outside of the Central Intelligence Agency's headquarters located in the area. Described as a barricade incident by Fairfax County Police, many reports reveal that the gunman fired multiple shots into the air.
According to the Daily Star, armed forces arrived at the scene following the reports of the unidentified gunman firing shots outside the CIA headquarters in Fairfax County, Virginia. Reportedly, SWAT teams, Fairfax County Police, and the Fairfax County Bomb Squad arrived at the scene at around 10:35 a.m. EDT.
While information regarding the incident is coming periodically and the CIA has not provided further details about the situation yet, Fairfax County Police did report the incident on X.
"Traffic Alert: Dolley Madison Blvd is shut down in both directions between Georgetown Pk and Savile Ln in McLean for a barricade incident at CIA HQ. Our Special Operations Division is on scene assisting," they wrote. "Please follow police direction."
As per WUSA9, the armed man was reported as experiencing a "mental health crisis." The Daily Star reported that, before the incident, the man was seen sitting on a bench near the CIA HQ. The outlet also reports that a SWAT team held the suspect at gunpoint while on the bench. This, however, has not been confirmed.
Conflicting Reports
Many outlets are currently reporting that the man fired shots. However, WJLA reports that officials confirmed that the gunman pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the CIA headquarters. However, as per a law enforcement official, no shots were fired.
In contrast, journalist Andrew Leyden, who was at the scene, reported the situation and did mention that shots were fired.
"Reports of a man with a gun spotted near CIA headquarters entrance in Virginia. Local police and SWAT en route," Leyden wrote. Minutes later, he will post, "Subject has fired multiple rounds into the air."
According to Fox 5, drones and helicopters are currently surveying the area. While the Fairfax County Bomb Squad arrived at the scene, it is still unknown whether there was a bomb or not in the area. Moreover, the identity and whether the gunman was arrested or if negotiators were used.
