Despite winning five Grammys and seven CMA Awards, Chris Stapleton hasn't had a No. 1 hit on the country radio charts until now.
Updated early this morning, "Broken Halos" has taken the No. 1 spot on the Mediabase Country Radio Singles chart, which ranks the number of spins a single gets on country radio within a week. Stapleton's ballad pushed Thomas Rhett's "Marry Me" to No. 2.
"Broken Halos" is the first track on Stapleton's 2017 record, From A Room: Volume 1. The song was released as a promotional single ahead of the album's release. After this amount of time, perhaps the song remains popular due to Stapleton's voice capturing the listener within the first second of the song.

After ringing out the first chord, Stapleton sings, "Seen my share of broken halos/Folded wings that used to fly/They've all gone wherever they go/Broken halos that used to shine." The sorrowful singalong leaves enough room for listeners to interpret it in their own personal way depending on one's own life experiences.
This week, Luke Bryan's "Most People Are Good" took the no. 3 spot on the Mediabase country chart while Devin Dawson's "All On Me" and Brett Eldredge's "The Long Way" came in at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
