Fixer Upper stars, Chip and Joanna Gaines thrive on taking on new projects every day, but what's great about that is their goal is always to improve the city of Waco. That's certainly the case with their latest venture -- the renovation of Elite Café. The rundown, historic cafe was purchased by the Gaines' earlier this year, and now the couple has revealed their plans for it.
The Elite Café has a rich history that goes back 97 years. It was once a popular stop for people traveling to and from Austin and Dallas. It even served Elvis Presley in the 1950's when he was still in the Army.
The old Café was known for their burgers and salads, but the Gaines' are going to switch it up a bit. Chip Gaines shared all the details with Southern Living.
"The Elite Café is going to be a breakfast joint," he reveals. "I've always been a breakfast connoisseur. I always do a heavy, bigger breakfast, but Jo is the exact opposite. She was kind enough to come with me on this one, and we are going to do up a breakfast joint here in town."
We can't imagine that their new restaurant won't become a new local hot spot. Aside from being the brainchild of a celebrity couple, the 8,356-square-foot building sits on Waco's traffic circle. That sounds like a recipe for success!
"The restaurant itself is literally one big giant kitchen. When we first got in there, it was all the things you can imagine--dingy, musky," Chip continues. "But if I took you in there today, you'd be like 'Oh! This is so clean, everything smells so great.' Those are a few benefits of a little bit of elbow grease and hard work on the front end."
We have no doubt the end result will be anything short of magical. The Gaines' new restaurant is expected to open sometime in the summer of 2017.
