He shared the note he sent to his co-workers on social media.
"To my incredible colleagues at CBS: I want to personally let you know that my work will soon no longer appear on CBS News," he wrote. "This is my decision, and I appreciate the bosses at CBS for understanding it.
"I will always value the opportunity I had to work alongside the talented and committed professionals here. I'm proud to have had the words 'CBS correspondent' next to my name - always will be."
He concluded his message with, "For the next phase of my career, I look forward to some independence and finding new spaces to share my work in line with my personal goals. I thank you all. The work will not stop, and I'll always be a call away."
Who is Scott MacFarlane?
MacFarlane joined CBS News in 2021 as a justice correspondent. Previously, he was an investigative reporter with NBC News. He was also a fill-in host at SiriusXM's politics channel and a reporter for COX Media Group radio and TV affiliate stations across Washington.
The reporter covered the over 1,600 federal cases that came from the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. He was also on the scene during the assassination attempt on then former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
It's the Latest Shakeup at CBS News
MacFarlane's exit is the latest since Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison hired Bari Weiss to lead CBS News.
As reported by the New York Post, the former New York Times columnist founded the Free Press, a newsletter known for taking positions against 'cancel culture' and 'woke' politics.
Earlier this year, 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi accused Weiss of bias when she shelved a report on the infamous CECOT prison in El Salvador. Weiss said it needed voices from the Trump Administration.
She has also been criticized for replacing CBS Evening News anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois with Tony Dokoupil. The 45-year-old suffered through several missteps during his debut broadcasts, which drew widespread attention.
