"CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways," the network said in a statement. "We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward."
Romo, 46, spent nearly a decade as CBS' lead NFL game analyst and color commentator. During his stint with the network, the Cowboys alum called three Super Bowls.
Romo had been on indefinite leave from CBS's top NFL team this season. JJ Watt was elevated to work with Jim Nantz while Ross Tucker joined Watt's former partner, Ian Eagle, on the second team.
Tony Romo Discusses CBS Departure
Following his departure, Romo issued a statement on Friday, saying, "I'm proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst the way I've approached everything in my life. With a desire to win and be the best that I can be. I'm going to use this time to take a break, something I've never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends. As well as the NFL community and fans."
Romo was arrested in July for DWI in his hometown after a poor showing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament.
Last month, the former Pro Bowl quarterback took responsibility for his actions and was transparent about his drinking problems.
"This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin," Romo wrote on Sept. 1. "I own this completely. Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant debilitating pain. The pain led to a dependence on pain medication. My efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol."
Romo was in the midst of a 10-year, $180 million contract extension with CBS.
