The life of James "Weston" Higginbotham came to a tragic end while he was on a family trip to Japan. Higginbotham was a 20-year-old college student at Auburn University in Alabama. He reportedly had a quarrel with his mom and went off on his own. According to People, he "was last seen on CCTV exiting a train in Yamashina on the night of Friday, May 29." After an exhaustive search, Higginbotham's body was located in a mountainous area of Kyoto. Foul play is not believed to be the reason for his passing. However, the young man's cause of death will evidently not be made public by authorities.

Higginbotham's Family Is Truly "Heartbroken"
Understandably, his family is crushed by this very sad outcome. They had hoped for days that Higginbotham would either return to them or be found safe somewhere. Nancy Higginbotham, his mother, took to
Facebook to express her feelings. Her deep pain is clear, as is her inconsolable grief. She posted this message on Saturday, June 6, the same day that volunteers discovered her son's body.She wrote in part, "Our family is heartbroken to share that Weston was found deceased by a volunteer search-and-rescue group in a mountainous area outside of Kyoto. The grief we feel is impossible to put into words. We are forever grateful for the time we had with our sweet, precious Weston, but cannot begin to understand what life without him will be like."
Nancy Higginbotham went on, "We are deeply grateful to the countless people across the United States, Japan, and around the world who shared Weston's story, prayed for our family, offered encouragement, and helped in the search efforts. The outpouring of kindness and support has carried us through the darkest days of our lives."
Her message is accompanied by a photo of Higginbotham. He has a backpack on and seems to be exploring a cave.
His Mom Said They Argued
Per NBC News, Nancy Higginbotham said prior to the discovery of her son's body that they had a spat about ChatGPT. He was apparently opposed to the escalating use of AI in society. "We had an argument because I was using ChatGPT too much to try to help us navigate the trip and find the best restaurants and do this and that."
She also mentioned at the time, "We try never to use it and I totally agree with him. It was just a dumb, dumb argument to have."
