The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner confirmed, via  KKCO 11, the NFL defensive end died from an acute combination of fentanyl, cocaine, and ethanol intoxication. The drug combination proved to be fatal.

Authorities believe that Mauro's death was accidental. He played as a defensive end for the Cardinals during his career. His family previously confirmed his death.

"With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new — living in the presence of the Lord — we humbly covet your prayers as our family walks through the devastating loss of our amazing son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend," his dad, Greg Mauro, wrote on 

Facebook. 

NFL Defensive End Passes Away

"On Thursday, April 23, Josh breathed his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven," he continued. "The Lord has been our strength in this unimaginable moment. Your prayers for continued strength and comfort mean more to us than words could ever express."

Other teams that Mauro played for include the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars. He played 80 games in the NFL.

"We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro," the Cardinals wrote on X after his death. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss."

Sports podcaster Rudy Reyes also memorialized the late athlete as well.
