Carrie Underwood Literally Soars at the 2022 American Music Awards

Carrie Underwood shone on a multi-genre stage during ABC's Sunday night (Nov. 20) broadcast of the 2022 American Music Awards (AMAs). The country singer soared, figuratively and literally, during a live rendition of her latest anthem for free spirits, "Crazy Angels."

Underwood looked eye-catching in a sea of megastars thanks to a multi-colored leotard paired with glittery makeup for a very '80s aesthetic. What got social media talking, though, was the impressive gymnastic act Underwood performed while suspended in a sphere above the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The grand entrance kicked off yet another memorable live TV moment for Underwood, who's fresh off a CMA Awards tribute to Loretta Lynn alongside Reba McEntire and Miranda Lambert. It also offered a taste of what happens nightly on Underwood's ongoing Denim & Rhinestones Tour, with fan footage online showing a near-identical production pulled off as part of her roadshow.

The show-stealing moment can be watched on ABC's website. In addition, the entire broadcast is streaming now on Hulu.

Underwood was up for two fan-voted awards on Sunday night: Favorite Country Album and Favorite Female Country Artist. Both categories were won by Taylor Swift as part of her six-trophy haul, with Red (Taylor's Version) winning both Favorite Country and Pop Album. Underwood's seventh album, Denim & Rhinestones became her first full-length — aside from holiday (My Gift) and gospel (My Savior) collections — not to win the AMA's Favorite Country Album. Since her Favorite Breakthrough Artist win in 2006, the American Idol champion has won 16 additional awards from 24 nominations.

Other performances of note include Stevie Wonder, Ari Lennox and Charlie Puth's musical celebration of 2022 AMAs Icon Award recipient Lionel Richie. The American Idol judge and prolific songwriter is reportedly working on a country album.
