On the album's second track, "Maybe I Never Loved You," Simon appears to throw shade at her ex-partner James Taylor.

"Maybe I never loved you / But anyway, I thought I did. I married you, we had a kid / That counts for something," Simon sings on the scathing new track in a transcript obtained by Page Six.

While the singer does not mention Taylor by name, she does sing about a former partner. And questions if the love that partner claimed to have for her was ever genuine.

"Maybe I never loved you / Yes, and maybe I did," she sings. "And maybe you never loved me / Although God knows, you said you did."

Despite the shots at the former partner, the country music star also reminisces about the times he rescued her. And wonders why and how everything between them became so sour.

"You came for me those times I hid / I'm so glad you did that. And maybe it's wrong to wonder how everything kind became forbidden," she adds.

However, the 83-year-old Simon doubles down and expresses her desire to move forward with her life. Beyond the relationship.

"And maybe it's best to bury whatever it was we had our fill of," she sings, before concluding, "Maybe I never loved you / Maybe I always will."

Of course, the lyrics to Simon's song went viral, and fans had a lot to say on social media.

"I see she attended the class on Taylor Swift at Harvard," one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Forgiveness is the way to happiness and the narrow gate," a second user chimed in.

"If she felt the need to write that now she still loves him," a third user remarked.

At the time of writing, Taylor has not responded to the lyrics in Simon's forthcoming track.

Simon's new album, Comes in Waves, drops this Friday (August 14).
