A typical police chase doesn't tend to look like this. As reported by the New York Post, a car thief took the unsual yet dangerous escape route of going under a bridge to try and get away from cops. The incident happened on April 1, but it certainly wasn't April Fools' Day.
The San Francisco Police Department released aerial footage of the shocking incident on social media. The footage shows police vehicles pursuing the suspect across the bridge. The suspect ends up stopping the car directly on the Bay Bridge, which connects San Francisco to Oakland.
And then, shockingly, the thief clambers over the bridge's edge and starts climbing underneath it. At one point, he managed to get himself stuck hanging on a steel beam. Luckily, he managed to get out of the situation alive.
According to the California Highway Police, who were also involved in the pursuit, lesser tactics didn't stop the thief, who was driving in a stolen Honda. They attempted to use spike strips to stop the car, but it didn't end up working.
The San Francisco Police Department said in a statement, "With crisis negotiators and aerial support in place, the incident concluded with the suspect taken into custody without further incident."

Sometimes the Police-Evading Attempts People Do Have Grave Consequences
In the grand scheme of things, that thief was lucky. Things can sometimes go a whole lot worst. We reported on one such example back in March, where a man jumped into a canal in an ill-fated attempt to get away from cops.
The incident happened on March 26 at around 1am local time in Tonawanda City, New York. After the man performed a "Vehicle and Traffic Law infraction", he sped off. But, a routine traffic stop ended up making him stop his vehicle in his tracks.
And then, things got dangerous. He fled on foot, down to the historic Erie Canal... and then he jumped. But, unlike the lucky thief who managed to survive his bridge-climbing escapade, the Tonawanda man wasn't so lucky. Despite "life-saving measures", he died at the scene.
